Telling the story of God
Have you ever listened to a talk or read a book that completely reoriented your perspective. How about reorienting your perspective on a Bible story? Great teachers and authors can open our eyes to whole new interpretations and deepen our understanding of context, language, and history. The SOULWorks Lecture Series brings a leading biblical or theological scholar to Saint John's each year to enrich our biblical understanding.
We have previously had such distinguished guests as Dr. Sandra L. Richter, Rev. Dr. Ben Witherington III, and The Rev. Jay Sidebotham. When possible, we use one of their works as the basis for our Adult Ed curriculum in the following months. Read more below about our speakers and book studies each year.
SOULWorks Lecture Series 2016: Stumbling Toward Jesus
In February 2016, The Rev. Jay Sidebotham of RenewalWorks brought his wit and insight into the journey of faith and spiritual growth to Saint John's. Building on his recent book Conversations with Scripture: Romans, he focused on the example of St. Peter as a template for our own stumbling efforts on the Christian walk. We studied this book in our winter Sunday Adult Formation class and were excited to welcome the author back to Saint John's at the conclusion of that study. Copies of the book are available at online retailers.
SOULWorks Lecture Series 2015: The New Testament Story
This is a plain English guide to the context of the New Testament that brings its authors to life and clearly explains how and why the New Testament documents were written and collected. Author, Rev. Dr. Ben Witherington III, was heartily received as the guest speaker at Saint John's SOULWorks Lecture Series 2015, and his book served as the core material for Sunday Adult Formation classes in Spring 2015. Copies are available from the church office, or at online retailers.
SOULWorks Lecture Series 2014: The Epic of Eden
The people of Saint John's immensely enjoyed the experience of meeting Dr. Sandra L. Richter, our guest speaker for the SOULWorks Lecture Series 2014. Her work, The Epic of Eden, laid the foundation for all Sunday Adult Formation classes for Spring 2014 and raised the level of the conversation within the parish about the critical value of the Old Testament to all Christians. As she writes, "this is our story," and one she tells well. This compelling and highly informative book is available at online retailers.
